Born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, David was introduced to music at an early age via the family gramophone, radio and a player piano. He soon discovered the church organ – and vowed to play it one day. The route to this lay strictly via the church choir (he became head boy) and piano lessons to grade 6. Organ lessons followed utilizing the fine pipe organs in Bradford Grammar School and St Peter’s Church, Shipley where he became Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, still in his teens. Also around 1963 he discovered organ music of a different type on the radio, enjoying the styles of George Blackmore, Joseph Seal, Robinson Cleaver and the other top players of the time and of course the sounds of the Wurlitzer and other types of organ.
His first theatre organ LP, ‘Presenting Reginald Dixon’, was in complete contrast to his second, ‘George Wright Plays the Mighty Wurlitzer’, all of these influences providing a wide range of inspiration. He sought out the nearest Wurlitzer – the 3/10 at the Gaumont, Bradford and, after a short feature at a COS meeting there, was soon being featured as house organist. David also toured Yorkshire clubs with his band ‘The Elektrons’, featuring a Lowrey organ, gaining considerable experience of playing for dancing and accompanying artists. Playing at the Gaumont led to an engagement at the nearby Silver Blades Ice Rink, Bradford, which in turn led to his moving to London (after a period at Bradford University) as resident organist at the prestigious Silver Blades, Streatham.
Since then David has been the COS London District Secretary, Musical Advisor, Projects Officer and national Chairman. Moving back to Yorkshire he had a spell as Yorkshire District Secretary, then managed and led the move of the COS Northern Wurlitzer into the Ritz Ballroom, Brighouse, plus subsequent enlargement/improvements.
David has undertaken concert tours of the USA and Europe and was honoured to play at the T.O.S.A. (Theatre Organ Society of Australia) annual Convention in Hobart a few years ago. He has made three commercial recordings, utilizing the Conacher at the Regal/Odeon/Scala, Rotherham (which he played for a time in the 1970’s), plus the Wurlitzers at Tywyn and Clydebank in more recently issued CD’s.
