Along with a number of young organists, Michael’s first experience of the theatre organ was at the 3 Js at Gomersal, playing the Compton organ which was sadly destroyed by fire in 1987. Encouraged by the organ’s owner, the late John Whiteley, he commenced lessons with Theatre Organist Joyce Alldred. Concert appearances followed both on pipes and electronics.
In 1997 he was the last organist to play at the Davenport Theatre, Stockport, playing for the final week along with an 18 piece orchestra for a production of 'Me and My Girl', also recording the theatre’s Compton organ along with several organists including Nigel Ogden, Joyce Alldred and Kevin Grunill for the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust before the instrument was removed. Since the reopening of the Plaza Super Cinema in Stockport, Michael has featured the organ there many times over the last ten years and has not only played many cinema interludes but also played for silent films, accompanied singers and choirs and played with the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra, a period 1920s/30s dance band. He has also featured the organ on GMR Radio and ITV's ‘Look North West’.
In 2005 he was invited over to America to play at the ‘Sound of the Silents’ film festival at the Lafayette Theatre, Suffern, New York and while there played as part of the ‘Fatty in Fort Lee’ Fatty Arbuckle season for the Fort Lee Film Commission.
Michael has been a professional musician since 1991 and is a director of music at two churches, a cabaret accompanist and also musical director for two touring theatre companies, playing all over the country. He also plays concerts, both on pipe and electronic instruments, recent venues including Stockport Town Hall (where he has also played for the tea dances and at several beer festivals), Ossett Town Hall, Compton Lodge, Leicester and is a regular performer at the Theatre Organ Heritage Centre at Peel Green, Manchester. He was also pleased to be asked to play the Compton Organ at the Pavilion Bournemouth in 2011 for one of their lunchtime concerts. Recent electronic concerts have included Rossendale, Trafford, Barrow in Furness and White Rose (Barnsley) playing his trusty Orla GT8000.
He has been featured on two CDs at the Plaza organ (in addition to the Davenport recording), one compilation and the other with ex. Sid Phillips Band vocalist Roy Chappell entitled ‘We’ll See You in the 1930s’ which has had very favourable reviews.
